ION - Elfish Tapes

ION is a Greek artist, active in the Athens underground scene for more than 20 years now. In the mid 1980's he played bass for dark electro post-punk band Rehearsed Dreams, who released a full-legth album on the seminal Creep label in 1985. After some years living in Sweden, in 1992, along with fellow musician Makis Faros he set up Elfish record label. The two of them also formed Raw, an electronic duo that managed to record three albums (the third remains unreleased).
The “Elfish tapes” project started last spring. It was recorded and produced, as scheduled, within the limits of one year. It is a 14 track album opening the “Elfish circle” trilogy, including collaborations with Spyros Faros, May Roosevelt, Ilias Katelanos & Phaedra Vokali. Each track will be accompanied with its dedicated video by Aggeliki Vrettou.
The “Elfish tapes” album will be initially released on Saturday, 27th of March as a free file /MP3 download from this blog.
A limited edition release of the audio/visual product is scheduled for a later date of this year.

Poplie radio show, 28th of March 2010

This Sunday found me in a really bad mood and the rainy weather outside did not help at all. So this show, especially the first half of it, follows my melancholy disposition, with things picking up significantly in the second hour. You can download it from the left column as usual. Review: Massive Attack - Heligoland

Heligoland is a German Archipelago in Northern Sea. And that is how the songs of the namesake Massive Attack album (with  Grant “Daddy G” Marshall back together with Robert Del Naja) sound like: autonomous sound islands scattered in a sea of ominous strings(without Craig Armstrong any more) and menacing rhythms. Definitely better than 100th Window but not a masterpiece, it leaves us without a sense of satisfaction despite the brilliant troupe of guest artists appearing: Damon Albarn (Blur), Andrew Utley (Portishead), Horace Andy, Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star), Martina Topley-Bird, Guy Garvey (Elbow).

Suggested tracks: Splitting The Atom, Paradise Circus, Atlas Air

Review: Sade - Soldier Of Love

The return of imperious Sade and her group, ten years after Lover's Rock. With a dynamic first single (Soldier of Love) she reminds everyone how much good, timeless music is missing these days. The album is low key, tight, without pointless elations and flourishes. And her instantly recognizable warm voice is there, ready to guide you to familiar but welcomed travel routes. We just bow to her.

Suggested tracks: Soldier Of Love, The Moon And The Sky, Babyfather

Poplie radio show, 14th of March 2010

This Sunday on Poplie the focus was mainly on new music - songs from new albums or just released singles. I tried to cover a wide variety of music from folk to pop to dance to indie rock. You can always download the show from the left column.

Poplie radio show, 7th of March 2010

This Sunday was again dedicated to the songs heard on the BBC Three series Being Human - the first part was on the 21st of February. Great music from a variety of artists, old and new - I just could not find Rebekka Karijord's haunting "The Noble Art Of Letting Go" to play, which is a shame. The show can be found on the left column for your pleasure!

Poplie radio show, 28th of February 2010: Kate Bush - This Woman's Work

This Sunday was filled with the aural landscapes of the incredible Kate Bush. A retrospective of her career that spans32 years, from the trills of "Wuthering Heights" to the melancholy piano of "Lyra". I even held a small contest  with the prize being the 7" picture disc of Kate's "King of the Mountain" 2005 come-back single. Download the show from the left column.
